How do I accept online payments?
To answer this question, we will need to explain what payment options you have and when you would choose them:
- Electronic funds Transfer (EFT): EFT payment is a direct deposit of money into you account. The only charges involved are from the bank for cash or cheque deposits, but these are minimal when compared to the charges involved for a credit card payment.
- Credit Card Payment (online payment): Credit card payment is an automated payment procedure. Funds are transferred automatically from the customer to the shop owner. The funds and credit card are still checked by the payment gateway and bank after payment is approved for any fraudulent activity and the method of dealing with such fraud differrs depending on your service provider. To accept an online payment, you will need to choose between using a super merchant account such as Payfast.co.za, Netcash.co.za or 2checkout.com or obtain your own merchant account and register with payment gateway service provider such as MyGate.co.za or VCS.co.za. Super Merchant accounts typically cost more per transaction when compared to having your own merchant account, but for smaller businesses or fewer transactions, it is far simpler to setup a Super Merchant account and avoid all the paper work and waiting periods associated with getting a merchant account of your own. Typically accounts such as this have a setup fee and/or monthly fee and a transactional fee.
- Payfast account:Payfast is very similar to an online bank. With millions of users all over the world, Payfast is a highly popular form of payment on the internet. However, due to the high risk of the South African market, Payfast accounts can not be created in South Africa. Third party companies such as 2checkout.com do offer a means to get around this with their account, for a once of setup fee of $49.
EFT payment methods are the easisest, cheapest and simplest to setup, but there is an inconvenience factor for your customer in having to make an EFT/cash payment which could result in you losing your client.
Credit card payments are the most accepted form of online payment in South Africa and of least convenience. Although fraud is a big detterent of internet shopping in South Africa, existing shoppers prefer the convenience of using a credit card to pay for online goods.
Typically it would be best to offer both options to your customers. However, as a start-up, offering only EFT payment to your customers for a period will give you the necessary time to adjust to an online market and familiarise yourself with its ins and outs.
