Video and eCommerce come together
Tuesday, 12 August 2008

The next big wave for ecommerce is the combination of video with online shopping. One of the more popular ways of exploring this angle of the ecommerce market is to do a video product review and post that review to U-tube. People seem to be more willing to buy something if they can view a video demo of the product.

Another trend that is emerging is to display short video clips of television shows, and then offer the products seen in the clips. SeenON! is a site that is exploring this method.

Flypaper is attempting something similar with their video podcast. At any point during a video clip you can follow a “Click to buy” link and the items appearing in the clip will be displayed for sale.

Two sites that offer information on the latest trends in the videocommerce market is the lewly launched Video Retailer blog and as well as the Video Commerce Consortium. It's a good idea to sign up to their newsletters to get the latest news of this exciting development in online shopping.

This is a great innovation, and should really improve the online shopping experience. It seems like quite high tech stuff - haven't seen any South
African online shops with something like this.

I guess this can also be implemented by having some sort of online shopping blog attached to the site, and simply posting youtube videos on the blog?

Yes, this should have a similar effect. It will just not be quite as sleek as Flypaper's system. But I woulds still recommend exploring it - anything that helps conversions is worth it.

A great innovation for ecommerce! Especially when shopping online as you cannot physical hold an item and need as much info and/or images and videos of the item as possible - to help with your buy decision.

Thank you for the blog mention! The Video Commerce Consortium is dedicated to advancing the use of video in e-commerce. We believe video is [at minimum] another tool in the online marketing toolbox. At best, it is an entirely new paradigm for e-commerce. Representing the VCC, I recently authored a white paper designed to help online retailers succeed with online video at http://www.video-commerce.org/...egy_2.pdf. I thought your readers might like it.

The video commerce space is evolving rapidly. It can be confusing at times, but the VCC believes focusing on tying video to transactions is the model that will ultimately win out. Given the current economic conditions [in the USA at least] there is a renewed focus on accountability. Video's ultimate success or failure hinges on the ability of the media/medium to drive sales.
